LOCATION
& AREA
The apartment is in the heart of Trastevere, one of the most ancient
and characteristic zones of Rome.
Trastevere was ,above all, a popular district inhabited by artisans
and small traders attracted by the proximity of the docks on the south
of Tiber Island.
Trastevere has never lost its popular character; poets who celebrated
Rome in the local dialect have always found a response there.
All along the noisy Viale di Trastevere, the side streets are packed
with stalls and coster's barrows beneath the benign watch of Madonnas
lit up by small lanterns.
On summer evenings the quiet squares are transformed by happy family
groups eating out in the open air; a charming aspect of the Roman
way of life.
Turning down into Lungotevere, you can see the remains of Ponte Rotto
(Broken Bridge), all that remains of the first stone bridge to span
the river. Built between 179 and 142 BC, it collapsed at the end of
the 16th century. Further down is Ponte Fabricio, which crosses to
Isola Tiberina. Built in 62 BC, it is the only classical bridge to
remain intact without help from the restorers. As for the island,
it's a calm respite from the city centre proper, its originally a
10th century church of San Bartolomeo worth a peep on the way across
the river to Trastevere, especially if you're into modern sculpture
- Padre Martini, a well-known local sculptor, used to live on the
island, and the church holds some wonderful examples of his elegant,
semi-abstract religious piece.
